Wet Wunderground
April 4, 2009
Hi this is Paul from… well frankly I don’t know exactly where I am now, because it’s dark and cold and the only sound is a constant tick, tick, tick as of a clock or water dripping through a crack, but I've heard voices outside the door promise to let me out as soon as I “fatten up enough to feed them,” whatever that means. Hope your day is better than mine.
APRIL SHOWERS
We made it all the way into April without once mentioning that April is the anniversary of Wunderground Magic. We were born back on April Fool’s Day in 1971 at the corner of Nine Mile and Woodward in Ferndale. We’ve moved around a few times since then. It’s like the three shell game, every time you think you know where we are, we move to maintain our secrecy. So if you think you know where we are now -- send help. I think they're going to eat me!
To help celebrate our birthday all month long we’ll be giving away a FREE RING with any purchase. These aren’t puzzle rings, and we have them in a variety of sizes and styles. We obtained a stock of these rings from the private collection of Ron Bauer who tells us they are the same kind of ring that they used to have at Sterling magic when he was first starting out as a budding magician. I didn’t ask him if one of these was the exact same ring as his first ring, but it very well could be. Don’t miss out.
KIDS CLASSES
A-Boo-Kadabra has been such a great success for our Kids Magic Classes, that we’re thinking of moving the whole store underground. That and we’re located on top of one of those famous Michigan potholes, so we don’t really have much choice in the matter.
Classes are still only $75 for six lessons, which includes a secret case, a secret wand-pen, a secret performance mat, and all the secret props you’ll need to perform the secret effects we secretly teach you.
ADULT WORKSHOP
Adult Workshops are held on the first Tuesday of each month, which will be April 7, from 6:30 until 8PM. Our theme this month is “close-up magic,” so make sure you're ready to get up close and personal by showering, shaving, and brushing no less than a week before showing up. When we get to stage magic you can go back to slacking off again. Workshops are $20 at the door.
NEWEST ADDITIONS
We have some cool new toys around the shop. As you drive past notice the rabbit that rises mysteriously from the giant top hat. I know, you’re thinking “That trick never works,” but “This time for sure!”
For those intrepid parents who wake up early on Saturday mornings to trek their kids all the way to the dungeons of the Wunderground Magic Academy for magic classes, we have a brand new $800,000 coffee maker (it gets more expensive every time I talk about it.) It uses a pod system to make a fresh cup in 30 seconds, and cleans up so easily that even a magician could do it.
NEW STUFF
In the playing card case we have Tragic Royalty cards, Texan Cards, and Unshuffled – the Paul Gertner effect where repeated shuffles actually unshuffle a deck of cards.
Zig Zag Rocky looks uncomfortable without a middle.
Want to be the next Jeff Dunham? Discover our ventriloquist dummies.
Wiregrams are back in stock, but they’re hot and they’re going fast. Imagine passing a wire through an open flame and watching as it visibly transforms into the name of a selected card.
If you like card manipulation, we have Jeff McBride, Dan and Dave, and the Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes.
There’s just one copy of Paul Harris’ True Astonishments left.
Did I mention that I just bought another magic shop? It was somewhere in California. They had about a dozen niteclub tables among the stock, so if you need a good performance table have I got a deal for you! There's lots of other good stuff in that lot as well, but I’ll tell you about it when it actually arrives. For now I'm excavating a sub-subbasement to make more room.

ROLEX KNOCKOFFS
Finally, if you’re one of the lucky ones who received an email from us offering special deals on Prada, Polo, Nike, Rolex, and other name brand merchandise on April Fool’s Day, no it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke, nor are we opening another merchandise line. Someone spoofed our return address. In light of that, your regularly scheduled April Fool’s joke will be continued indefinitely through the year.
Take care, Paul
