Banachek who? Edition
June 26, 2009
Hello Wunderground spelunkers, and welcome to another exciting edition of the Wunderground Magic Newsletter, filled with extra punctuation marks at no extra charge!!
Did you know that Wunderground Magic is now open Sundays for your shopping convenience? There was more magic than we could fit into six days, and we couldn’t dig space in the dungeons fast enough, so the only alternative was to add another day to our week. (If we have to add another day, we’re thinking of putting it somewhere between Wednesday and Thursday.) We’ll be here from noon until 5 on Sunday.
CINEMA IN THE STREETS
Every year about this time, Clawson closes down Main Street in front of our store for a brilliant magic show, and then they show a movie afterward. This year they’re going to show “Raiders of the Lost Ark” on July 11, promptly at dusk. Come out and perform street magic with us, snag some popcorn, and enjoy the free movie.
BANACHEK
I don’t dare say any more lest I don’t get a good seat. Stay home on Monday night and watch the masked magician instead. I hear he’s going to reveal the ball and vase.
KIDS CLASSES
Every Saturday morning at 10 AM we have magic lessons for children age 7 through 13. Contact the store for more details, or call Dave directly at home, preferably sometime around 2 AM. He’s a magician. He never sleeps.
ADULT WORKSHOP
The theme for July’s adult magic workshop is “Street Magic.” This is the kind of magic, recently made popular by David Blaine and Criss Angel, that can be performed standing up, surrounded, and up close. And let’s face it; in this economy it’s always a good idea to have a lucrative back-up vocation, like street performer. So come to the secret dungeons far beneath Wunderground Magic, Tuesday, July 7, from 6:30 until 8PM, to learn to perform street magic. Then come back to Clawson on July 11 and perform for Cinema in the Streets.
EVENTS
Forget I ever said anything about Banachek, the world’s greatest mentalist, coming to the Royal Oak Community Center on Monday June 29 at 7:30 PM. Don’t even think about going to 3500 Marais, Royal Oak, MI 48073, Room 6. North of 13 Mile Rd, East of Woodward, between Crooks (3rd block east of Crooks) and Main St. (3rd block west of Main.) And whatever you do, don’t go to http://IBMring22.org to learn more about lectures and events being put on by the local magic ring. You can thank me next time you see me.
Our good friend Tomas Media from Fun Inc. will be at the ABC Magic Shop on July 10 and 11. Thomas has just released a new DVD on card essentials and it’s getting rave reviews. For $20 you receive an autographed copy of "Card Move Essentials" from Tomas himself. Or you can buy the DVD from Wunderground Magic for only $19.99 and see the lecture at ABC for only $20 more. There will be 2 lectures: Friday July 10th at 7:30 P.M.; and Saturday July 11th at 3:00 P.M. Call ABC Magic at 586-790-3700 for any questions or just to give the guys working there a hard time.
WHAT WON'T THIS GUY DO!?
International Man of Mystery, Horticulturist, Marksman - now PRODUCT PITCHMAN!? That’s right; it’s our very own Keith Stickley for Affordable Pro Audio. Watch the video at http://affordableproaudio.com
FEATURED MAGIC
We’re excited about the new DVD “Malone on Marlo,” not that we’ll ever be able to do any of the material, but because we enjoy watching magic that is elegant, almost sublime, and always genius.
If you haven’t been in recently, you’ve missed out on the assortment of special playing cards we stock. I was going to rave about the new faded cards, but we’re down to only two decks left, and Chuck has them in his hands right now. He also has multi colored cards, fan back Tally-Ho, bridge size Squeezers, Texas cards, Dr. Leon, Gold Standard, and a plethora (Look it up. I did.) of other cards.
Arron Fisher has a new DVD out called “Search and Destroy” featuring “The Nowhere Pass.” He has a book out too, called The Paper Engine, which isn’t such a big deal, except IT’S BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND UP UNTIL NOW. And I have three copies.
One of our favorite performers, Rudy Twomoon, noticed that the magic cases we had, well…left a lot to be desired. He went out and got some cases and tricked them out a magic case should be. These cases are designed by a professional magician for a magician with special holders for cards, thumb tips, sponge balls, linking rings, and all the equipment you need to perform (except a garish tuxedo, of course.) They’re expensive, at $150 each, but they’re worth it in reduced fumbling.
If you want to save money, be sure to delve into our Discount Dungeon. There’s no telling what you may find there. And at prices this low, I’m sure to come up with a pun about why we keep it in the dungeons, eventually.
BANACHEK STORY
Tony Gerard of the Timid Rabbit asked me to ask Banacek about the time he was judging a magic contest. Since you won't be going to his lecture on the 29th, I thought I'd share it here. Apparently one of the performers was getting ready back stage, and soaked his dove pan down in lighter fluid in anticipation of his performance. Well the prior act ran long, so he soaked it again, just in case. Then the judges got to talking, and more time passed before he went on, so just before he took the stage he soaked it a third time, just to be sure. Well, the performance went off well enough, but when he dropped a match into the pan, it exploded. Thinking fast, he grabbed the lid to put it out, while Banacek roared "NOOOOOO!" Instead of producing three live chicks from the dove pan, he produced three little fireballs that started running frantically around the stage. Then, he did the only thing that could possibly make matters worse - he stomped them out.
Next time something goes wrong at your magic show, remember, it could be worse.
Take care, Paul
