Yuletide Wunderground

November 30, 2009

Someone pointed out to me that, not only are we the best magic shop in Oakland County, but we’re also the worst magic shop in Oakland County. So, we’re working hard to improve our image. We hope someday to aspire to become the most mediocre magic shop in Oakland County. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, we appreciate your reviews – good, bad, or indifferent.

Hi, this is Paul from Wunderground Magic, Inc. The weather outside isn’t exactly frightful, but it is starting to get just a bit surly. That means it’s time to curl up with a good magic book and start working on your sleight of hand until spring. We’ve pulled out the hot chocolate attachments for the coffee maker, dressed the manikins in warm clothes, and insulated the dungeons – not so much to keep them warm, it’s more for the sound, the cries of anguish were upsetting to some of our customers.

Extended Hours
To make it more convenient for you to get your magical gifts we’re extending our store hours, because while you might be able to work miracles, you still need to work on that whole “stopping time” thing.

From now until December 25, we will be open from 10 AM until 8 PM, Monday through Saturday and from Noon until 6 PM on Sundays.

Frank Jogular's New Column?
This month we have a new feature by a writer who prefers to remain anonymous. After reading what he has to write, you may understand why.

Dear Wunderground Customers,

Want to learn the secret of the bullet catch? Then read on… I have to get your attention somehow!

I’m Frank Jogular, guest columnist for the Wunderground Magic Newsletter, and I am here to point out some things you probably don’t know about, but SHOULD! Over the next few months I am going to share with you some little known TREASURES available from Paul and the crew @ The Wunderground that most simply don’t know about.

Often when I am relaxing at the Wunderground and picking up the latest copies of MAGIC and Genii magazine, magicians – both amateur and professional – approach the friendly staff and ask, “Hey – what’s new here!?”. But sadly, I have yet to hear anyone ask – “Hey – what’s GOOD here!?”

With the constant incoming flow of sub-par trick of the week magic that gets purchased only to live out the rest of its life in your junk magic drawer before being auctioned off at one of Hank Moorhouse’s flea market events some twenty years later, it’s sometimes hard to know what hidden gems are lurking around the shop that could have a lasting and important impact on you and your magic. Believe it or not, there are a few gems that once acquired; you probably wouldn’t give up for ANYTHING!

Case in point…

There is a little book, currently in stock at the Wunderground that has been a closely guarded “hidden in plain sight” secret for nearly 70 years. But almost no one knows about it…

Within its pages contains the secret of Penn & Tellers Bullet Catch trick. Thought it was a creation of Banachek? Not so fast. He may have made some modernizations, but the secret is right here in plain black and white!

Ever wanted to learn the ins and outs of Okito’s famous floating ball routine? Well it is in print in a few places with various contributions, but right here in this VERY SAME BOOK is an in depth explanation of the floating ball effect. This is a version that DOESN’T require expensive and complicated rigging, and is quite portable.

Looking for some quality STAND UP material for those shows that you need to play a bit bigger? How about an amazing comedy “cutting a spectator in half with ropes” trick that could fill the largest stage, and literally fit in a briefcase? IT’S ALSO IN THIS BOOK!

This book contains TONS more material used and adapted by magic’s elite for decades. From some of the best and easiest to do routines with Chinese linking rings, to billiard balls, coins, and even card tricks, this is a book held so close to the vest, not many magicians were privy to the knowledge it even existed. And YOU can now have a copy!

OK OK OK! I know you want to know what this book IS…

It’s called Hugard’s Annual of Magic. It has recently been re-printed in very limited numbers, and is available from the Wunderground. For the price of 1 or 2 packet tricks that you’ll never perform, you can own this fine volume of magic and be privy to Jean Hugard’s genius – and opportunity most in our craft will never have.

So go down to the Wunderground, and pick up your copy of Hugard’s Annual of Magic, and pick up a book you will actually USE, read, and CHERRISH for the rest of your life.

Until next time!

ONWARD!

Frank Jogular

Magic Classes
Children’s Magic Classes
Kids love magic. They love watching magic, and they love performing magic. Magic classes for children, ages 7 to 13, are held every Saturday at 10AM in the secret dungeons of Wunderground Magic. We know you’re busy so we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible. Join anytime, just show up a few minutes before class to register. You’ll get a punch card that’s good for six lessons anytime over the next six months. (And if you’re too busy to take at least one lesson a month, we can work something out there as well.) The only thing that could make it easier is if Dave came over to your house and taught you personally.

Sign up now, because we’ll be raising the prices after the first of next year.

Adult Magic Workshop
Adult Magic Workshops are held the first Tuesday of each month for adults ages 14 and over.

This month’s workshop will explore “Magic with Everyday Objects.” Imagine being able to perform amazing feats of impossibilities with pieces of paper, matches, pens, pencils, rubber bands, napkins, straws, and other objects that are within your grasp at all times. Learn to astonish anytime, anywhere, without having to carry around big illusions.

The next Adult Magic Workshop is Tuesday, December 1 at 6:30 PM, here in the dungeons of Wunderground Magic for the pittance of only $20.

Advanced Magic Workshop
Arthur Ottney is offering advanced workshops for adults ages 14 and over on the third Tuesday of each month.
This month’s topic is “Using People : How to Make Things Appear on Other People” This is magic that is up close and personal. Coins, Cards, Silks, Sponge Balls -- it happens to your audience and gets them involved.
The next Advanced Workshop will be December 15 from 6:30 until 8PM for the moderate fee of only $30.

Contact Juggling
Our favorite contact juggler, Flec, is back from New Orleans and will be teaching classes the first three Wednesdays of December. That’s December 2, 9, and 16th for those who are calendar challenged.

Contact juggling lessons are held from 5 until 7PM for the exorbitant fee of $40 for the first lesson (which includes a practice ball) and a more modest $20 for each additional lesson.

Where are They Now?
What happened to all these stores? From the "Did You Know" Department, we bring you this:

Romig Magic & Book Company
Started in 1971 by Charles Romig in an office building just down the street from Sams Jams in Fashionable Ferndale. Sold to Mike Foydel in 1981 who expanded the store and moved into the vacant Crazy Benzy's on 9 mile just west of Woodward. After spending almost 10 years in Ferndale, Foydel moved the store to Royal Oak and renamed it "The Wunderground." Foydel sold the store in 2005 after nearly 25 years in the Magic, Puzzle and Toy Business.

Twin Pines Dairy Farm
It's been a long time since fresh milk, cream, and cottage cheese were delivered right to your milk chute, but for almost 20 years, Twin Pines was perhaps Detroit's finest creamery. Before the emergence of convenience stores, Twin Pines was such a success that it even had its own children’s television show, Milky's Party Time, from 1950 to 1967.

December Specials
Jigsaw Puzzles
From now until the end of the year, all jigsaw puzzles are 30% off.

Free Magic
By popular demand, we are pleased to offer free magic kits with any purchase of $50 or more at Wunderground Magic, Inc. Because the only thing better than getting magic for the holidays is getting it free.
