May Flowers Bring Back Wunder
May 13, 2010
Well my car finally died. It was older than my son, and he's in college now (which I'm sure contributed something to the reason the car died, but let's not go there.) I appreciate everyone who drove by and laughed as I used to struggle to get it up to its top speed of eight miles an hour (downhill) as I valiantly tried to make it to the shop by opening bell in the morning. The problem was that I had to start out before the store closed the previous night in order to get here on time, so I was chronically late. (And you thought I was just lazy.)
I have a new car now. Well, it's not exactly new, in fact it's only a few months younger than the other one. Let's just say it's a different car, which will give you all new opportunities to point and laugh as you cruise by. But it still has that "new car smell," which I painstakingly recreated with a mixture of the naturally occurring mildew and an aerosol fart spray. (It turns out that not all cars have the same new car smell.) In the meantime, if you know anyone who is hiring college students for summer work to pay off the cost of a "new" car that smells, please drop me a line.
Hi, this is Paul from Wunderground Magic with an opportunity that doesn't stink. Throughout the month of May, as part of a special Passport to Clawson promotion, I will be appearing live at the Black Lotus Brewing Company on Tuesday evenings from six to eight. I've only been performing there for two weeks so far, so you still have the opportunity to be the very first to see me. *** Reminder: New Store Hours
Don't forget that Wunderground Magic is now closed on Mondays. That gives me an extra 24 hours to drive to the store, so I should be there on time for the Tuesday evening performances at Black Lotus. (But you know me. I'll probably get lost crossing the street.) *** Classes Advanced Adult Workshop - Third Tuesday
Want to get someone's attention? Borrow their money. Want to get a lot of peoples' attention? Run off with it.
This month's Advanced Workshop focuses on bills - gimmicked and ungimmicked. We'll cover several effects including switches, restorations, penetrations, transpositions, vanishes, appearances, and more. It's solid material that you can mix and match to create cool routines. Trust us, if it's their money in play, you'll have a captive audience.
Advanced adult magic workshops are held the third Tuesday of each month, which this month will be May 18, at 6:30 PM. That still gives you half an hour before class to catch Paul performing across the street at the Black Lotus. Thursday Sessions
We’re open until 8 on Thursday evenings. Come out and share, learn, watch, or just discuss magic. Bring your own props. We’ll supply common items such as cards, rope, rubber bands, mats, and a mysterious place to gather. Children’s Classes
Classes for children ages 7 through 13 are held every Saturday morning from 10 until 11 AM in the Wunderground Magic Academy. When you sign up you will get a wand, a performance mat, and a box to hold the magic props we will give you as you progress through the course. Sign up today. Adult Workshop - First Tuesday
Our June magic workshop will feature impromptu magic. These are effects that can be performed anytime, anywhere, with everyday objects.

Shrinking and Growing Head Illusion
The magician displays a 15-inch, specially made spiral disk; imagine the kind a hypnotist might use. The spiral is spun and you instruct the audience to stare at the spiral and not look away. You start to count backwards from 10 to 1, and when you reach one, you tell the audience to look at your nose. TO THEIR AMAZEMENT, YOUR HEAD BEGINS TO GROW LIKE A BALLOON BEING INFLATED! Master Flash by Jim Pace
Technically, you should be able to get fire from pretty much anything you want.
The Master Flash Gimmick is a very flat battery. It has a nichrome wire loop for igniting flash cotton or flash paper. It has a button for ignition. There is a double stick tape on the back to place the gimmick virtually anywhere.
Imagine a fire gimmick that is so flat that it will mount into any book, even a paperback! Instant Magician by Kevin James, Jan Torell, Sonny Fontana
This is a wonderful audience participation routine. The performer introduces a small black satin bag, produces and tosses various objects (cards, magic wand, billiard balls, etc.) inside. Once completed, he turns the bag inside-out only to have it transform into a beautiful magician's costume.
He then invites an adult or child onstage dresses them in a magicians costume. The spectator stands with his hands behind his back and the magician puts his arms through the costume and performs some magic. It looks as if the spectator is doing the magic.
The magician verbally cues the spectator how to react. The illusion is perfect and very funny. Includes the Costume and Instructional Video *** And Finally
We're looking for street performers for events in and around Clawson this summer. Every year Clawson closes its streets for spectacular events such as Movie Night, the Clawson Car Show, and the End of Summer Block Party - which everyone knows is really just an excuse for us to get out and have fun performing magic. This summer there will also be a Farmer's Market in Clawson Park on Sundays.
If you would like to be an elite member of The Wunderground Magic Street Performers and Rubber Chicken Wranglers, send me your email address, and I will let you know more specifics of the events as they are about to occur.
Take care, Paul
